Tablet-Optimized Websites

I recently purchased a Motorola Xoom tablet as my replacement for a personal home laptop. While my co-workers and fellow code monkeys may find this perplexing, I found it as a perfect way to save some money in the world we live in.

Think about it: when you're at home you mostly use a laptop (or desktop for that matter) for checking email, surfing the internet, some money management, and maybe some gaming for those of us who refuse to let go of our inner child. Not to toot my own horn, but my Xoom can do all of those things just as well as a traditional laptop, but with more portability and speed. Oh, and for half the price.  But what would make surfing easier on a device that looks like laptop but acts like a phone?

What were once known as "Cellphones" have come a long way in the last few years, and now we are in the midst of a "Mobile Device" or "Handset" revolution. Since the iPhone came out in 2007, phone manufacturers have been forced to step up their game and take things to the next level. When you add in new offerings in the form of Google's Android, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 and the Palm's WebOS we finally have plenty of good mobile OS options, and the consumer is benefiting from competition with more features and lower prices (if only the service providers would follow suit). If you don't already have a smart phone, chances are that you are planning to get one when your contract is up. For those of us in the industry,  this is the transition to the time where the mobile website will not be just an afterthought, but in some cases may be even more mission critical than the traditional web site. This brings up a whole new set of challenges and concerns for the strategy and planning of a web presence.

Specialized Search Engines

Bing launched a beta version of its visual search option this week. This "search" allows users to select from a pre-defined list of categories (currently the list is 50) and peruse images rather than search listings for results. Check it out yourself here: http://www.bing.com/visualsearch. With the launch of a new search technology, I thought it would be fun to revisit some other search engines besides the market leaders. When we discuss SEO, we typically focus on the main search engines (Google/Yahoo), but if your business is specialized, you may get more bang for your buck by focusing on PPC or submitting content to more specialized search engine sites.
