What were once known as "Cellphones" have come a long way in the last few years, and now we are in the midst of a "Mobile Device" or "Handset" revolution. Since the iPhone came out in 2007, phone manufacturers have been forced to step up their game and take things to the next level. When you add in new offerings in the form of Google's Android, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 and the Palm's WebOS we finally have plenty of good mobile OS options, and the consumer is benefiting from competition with more features and lower prices (if only the service providers would follow suit). If you don't already have a smart phone, chances are that you are planning to get one when your contract is up. For those of us in the industry,  this is the transition to the time where the mobile website will not be just an afterthought, but in some cases may be even more mission critical than the traditional web site. This brings up a whole new set of challenges and concerns for the strategy and planning of a web presence.

Specialized Search Engines

Bing launched a beta version of its visual search option this week. This "search" allows users to select from a pre-defined list of categories (currently the list is 50) and peruse images rather than search listings for results. Check it out yourself here: http://www.bing.com/visualsearch. With the launch of a new search technology, I thought it would be fun to revisit some other search engines besides the market leaders. When we discuss SEO, we typically focus on the main search engines (Google/Yahoo), but if your business is specialized, you may get more bang for your buck by focusing on PPC or submitting content to more specialized search engine sites.

Apple today announced that the iphone (that previously sold for $199) is now on sale for $99. This price reduction is in response to the Palm Pre that is now available (retail price - $199) as well as the launch of the iphone 3G S - a faster version with more features. The iphone 3GS will also be sold at $199. Read more at Tech Crunch.

Apple's brand has been built on cutting edge technology catering towards the younger, hipper, computer user. Apple is innovative and design focused. The brand is "cool", their products are cool, ads are cool, and the Apple suite of products is not for everyone. The reason why its so cool is because your mom doesn't use an iphone - you do. You are the tech saavy consumer that likes to have the latest, greatest products to show off to your friends and the design is so cool, you just have to have it.

So what does it mean if Apple is slashing its prices to gain greater market share with the iphone? Are they slashing their brand as well?

For the last four years, I carried the crummiest phone one could imagine. When I recently brought it into the T-Mobile store they all gasped in horror as I presented my prehistoric beeper of a handset, hairline fractures held together by scotch tape and all. Needless to say, buying the new T-Mobile G1 was a pretty serious upgrade, and as of recently apps are beginning to surface that are mind blowing considering where I am coming from.

Within the last two months I've gotten deeper and deeper into these free and easy to acquire Android applications. About a week ago, I downloaded Shazam and ShopSavvy. Wow, these are two of the most mind-blowing apps I have encountered thus far!  Their functionalities are right-on and the technology in both is seriously next level.
