We usually don't have requests for SEO 101 or a basic presentation about SEO fundamentals.  In fact, most of the time when we do speaking engagements or we have strategy sessions at a client's site, we are specifically told, "don't make the presentationt to basic."  That said, almost every speaking engagement or strategy session includes Q & A time to anwser questions and invariably crazy theories, bad advice received, or outdated "SEO Best Practices" come up.  So, one of the things that we have been doing more of lately is passing along variations of this PPT, and having conversations about SEO basics and SEO strategy.

See the presentation below...

I recently googled myself to see what pages show up in the search results and noticed a paid ad by google on the top of my page...

So I clicked on google.com/profiles to see what this is all about...

Direct Traffic seems like such a simple and easy concept to grasp: Direct Traffic is traffic that comes to your site without referral information. A common example would be a bookmark or direct type in of your URL. And that is where the problem comes in: it isn't that simple.

In reality, direct traffic is really equivalent to "you got me" traffic, as in, "Where did this visitor come from?" "Eh, you got me."

Specialized Search Engines

Bing launched a beta version of its visual search option this week. This "search" allows users to select from a pre-defined list of categories (currently the list is 50) and peruse images rather than search listings for results. Check it out yourself here: http://www.bing.com/visualsearch. With the launch of a new search technology, I thought it would be fun to revisit some other search engines besides the market leaders. When we discuss SEO, we typically focus on the main search engines (Google/Yahoo), but if your business is specialized, you may get more bang for your buck by focusing on PPC or submitting content to more specialized search engine sites.
